Hospital based scalp cooling

Paxman Scalp Cooling

In 2019, The Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand fundraised $500,000 to allow 10 Paxman scalp cooling machines to be available for New Zealand public hospitals.

Currently, only Nelson and Rotorua public hospitals have installed the Paxman cold capping machines.

Paxman cold capping machines are available at the following private cancer clinic locations (N.B. some health insurance providers fund scalp cooling and others don’t).

Manual Cold Capping Hire/Purchase

Penguin Cold Caps

Penguin cold caps are available for monthly hire. There is currently an Australian distributor who covers Australia and New Zealand. The Australian distributor has a good supply of caps and a couple of sets are stored in New Zealand for late notice orders.

Penguin cold caps are hired on a monthly basis and have a current charge of $A399 per month.

Please allow enough time for the caps to be shipped.

Penguin cold caps can either be cooled in a portable cooler of dry ice or chilled in a hospital biomedical freezer. This is to allow the caps to get to around -30°C, as per the Penguin capping protocol.

Dry ice can be sourced in New Zealand from several different companies at a cost between $120-$200 for the required 20kg. Some companies may offer a discount for chemotherapy use.

Ice Kaps

IceKaps can be purchased from their website. These caps were designed for migraine symptom relief but there have been some anecdotal case reports of success with these caps for cold capping during chemotherapy.

IceKaps provide information about relieving headaches during chemotherapy but do not make claims that their product can prevent hairloss.
